Chelsey Bills holds a BFA focusing on Textile Design from Rhode Island School of Design (2009). During school Chelsey had the opportunity to study abroad in Kyoto, Japan where she learned traditional papermaking and katazome fabric dying. After school she moved to Maui, Hawaii where she taught classes on making natural dyes from plants and vegetables at the Hui No’Eau Visual Art Center. She has also lived and worked in New York City and has recently relocated to Milwaukee, her hometown.
Chelsey works mainly with large-scale print and pattern on fabrics that become both spatial installations and paintings. Working in series, she draws heavily on her experiences traveling to piece together concepts of space and place through pattern and color exploration.
