Coloring a community with art

It started with some local artists complaining about Milwaukee not having a residency program for artists. It’s now a full fledged operation that is improving the community and exposing thousands of students to art.

Co-founder Steven Vande-Zande explains, “It’s incredibly exciting to see people come in for all sorts of reasons. To see a show, take a class with a school group or just meet with an artist.”
Redline Milwaukee is a nonprofit charitable organization that works like an urban laboratory. Art becomes a tool to make Milwaukee better. Co-founder Lori Bauman notes, “The gallery usually holds an exhibition that holds socially relevant content, that becomes the textbook.”
Bauman adds, “Businesses are finally realizing why they want to keep the creative community in town and what we give back to the community,  financially emotionally politically.”
More than 3 thousand MPS students go through the site each year. Redline Milwaukee is a reminder, that like a paintbox, art can color the soul of a community. And for the staff, Redline Milwaukee is a labor of love. Vande-Zande exclaims, “I think its something the community needed five years ago. It’s been incredibly exciting!”
