Novice and advanced printmakers alike are invited to join us for an in-depth look at spitbiting, a relatively immediate and painterly form of etching. The workshop will explore nontraditional methods of spitbite aquatint, hardground techniques, and mark-making with inking/printing methods. Experience is not required.

All materials will be provided; however, participants are encouraged to pack a lunch and bring a small glass jar with lid to store excess spitbite acid.

The technique of spitbite aquatint involves painting strong acid on an aquatint ground-prepared plate. Traditionally, the plateground is done with rosin dust and then painted with an acid. Depending on how long the acid is left on the plate, more subtle light to dark tones can be achieved.
