Understanding Ellsworth Kelly Without Understanding Ellsworth Kelly
A solo exhibition of paintings and works on paper by John Kowalczyk
July 4, 2012 through July 14, 2012, Opening Reception July 6, 6-9pm
Redline Milwaukee is pleased to announce Understanding Ellsworth Kelly Without Understanding Ellsworth Kelly, a solo exhibition of paintings and works on paper by John Kowalczyk, www.johnkowalczyk.tumblr.com. The work in this show borrows color palettes and formal arrangements from Ellsworth Kelly but instead of a pure and minimal surface it is saturated, layered, and patterned. Kowalczyk is interested in the hierarchy of painting and the similarities between decorative and conceptual painting. Fabrics, handmade papers, repurposed prints, and ribbons are some of the collage elements that create the layers within the work, the materials are kitsch in nature but transcend themselves when placed in their high art context. The opening reception will be held on Friday July 6th, 2012 from 6 to 9pm.
John Kowalczyk was born in Chicago, IL in 1988. He was the winter artist in resident with the Around the Coyote Gallery in Chicago, IL in 2007 and graduated from Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in 2010. Kowalczyk is currently an artist in residence with RedLine Milwaukee where he holds a studio and volunteers with the community to share his love of art. John recently showed his work with American Fantasy Classics, Cedarburg Cultural Center, The Charles Allis Art Museum, and Effjay Projekts.
